Before you collect inspiration images, define your project in plain language.

Try these prompts:

• What is the daily frustration we’re fixing? (crowded kitchen, no storage, dated bathroom, poor lighting, awkward layout)

• What’s the lifestyle upgrade? (entertaining, indoor–outdoor flow, better work-from-home space, multigenerational living)

• What’s the non-negotiable? (ocean-view opening, walk-in pantry, curbless shower, second bedroom, dedicated laundry)

• What’s the time horizon? (staying 2–3 years vs. 10+ years changes decisions)

When homeowners skip this step, they often end up with a “nice” remodel that doesn’t actually feel easier to live in.
