Skylights and natural light: when they’re worth it

Skylights can be a great upgrade in older homes that feel dark—but they should be planned carefully because roof penetrations require perfect detailing.

Skylights are often worth it when:

• you want light in a hallway, bath, or kitchen that lacks windows

• you’re already doing roofing work (best time to integrate them)

• you’re improving ventilation (some skylights open)

The key is correct flashing, waterproofing, and placement. A skylight that’s installed with shortcuts is a future leak.
