Step 6: Understand the contract before you sign
A contract should protect both sides and create clarity. At minimum, look for:
- Clear scope and specs
- Payment schedule tied to milestones
- Start date and timeline expectations
- Warranty/closeout expectations
- Change-order process in writing
- How disputes are handled
- What happens if material lead times change
If you don’t understand a section, ask questions until you do. Clarity prevents conflict later.
