Step 3: Compare apples to apples (most bids aren’t comparable)
One of the most common homeowner mistakes is choosing the “best price” without understanding what’s included.
A professional bid should clearly define:
- Scope of work (what is included and excluded)
- Materials and finish level
- Allowances (and what they realistically cover)
- Timeline assumptions
- Permit responsibility
- Change-order process
If two bids are $30,000 apart, it often means the scope is different—not that one contractor is “overpriced.”
